Here’s my 5 tips which help me to boost productivity as a freelancer!
Now, you may have seen on LinkedIn recently that I posted about improving workflow and ways to boost your productivity.
For me as a freelancer time is critical, there is never an infinite amount of given time or a limitless budget allocated to a project, there’s always deadlines to meet and key deliverables to each task.
These 5 simple but effective tips really help me to keep on track and get the most out of my work schedule.
Straight in at number 1…
1. Establish a clear routine
Build a structured routine that suits you and that you can stick to. Create an action plan and write a list getting everything that you can think of out of your head and into some kind of list. Then take a look at the list and begin to prioritise the tasks which are most important towards those that are less critical.
2. Be realistic
Understand your goals and objectives and consider the appropriate amount of time required to tackle each task. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, think about everything that you need to do to get the task done and done right, most importantly!
It’s no good rushing the thing and making a fast job of it. This is normally when mistakes tend to happen. It's always good to push yourself but try to avoid rushing through things or leaving yourself short on time.
3. Block out your time
This is crucial for maintaining focus. Once you have the list you can then look at your work schedule and begin to block out time. Set multiple alarms, reminders, or alerts on your phone to help you keep track of where you’re up to. This will help you to effectively manage your time and plan accordingly. Trust me! It feels good to check things off the list.
4. Be kind to yourself
This is a biggie and maybe the most important! It’s probably one that we forget all too often. Eating well, staying hydrated, and getting enough rest are not simply comfort things. These are all the necessary ingredients we need to function well and achieve our best.
We also don't tend to perform at our best when we put excessive pressure on ourselves. It's easier said than done, especially when faced with tight deadlines, but it's also important to allow yourself a break once in a while.
5. Change your surroundings
As creatives, we are often inspired by our environment. Sometimes it's beneficial to break away and switch things up. For example, I often visit coffee shops and work for a few hours to get a change of scenery. I must add that this is not always suitable for every task and sometimes I need to be by the side of my workstation.
Although, in my experience I have found that the bustle of people going about their day and the change of scenery often helps me to take a step back, analyse and refine what I’m doing. It also helps that I’m a mad coffee lover!
Yesterday, I took this photo at the Lost Barn in Tilston, Cheshire. I love my coffee, and this converted barn provides a great breakout space. It's located in a tranquil setting in the Cheshire countryside where they roast and brew different coffees from around the world.
